Lot 104 La Borinqueña #1 Signed Comic
La Borinqueña #1 (Second Printing Variant) Signed Comic
This is a copy of La Borinqueña #1, the critically acclaimed independent comic book written and created by Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez and published by Somos Arte. Autographed on the front cover in silver marker with a personalized inscription in the top-left area reading, "To Eugene, Gracias!" alongside creator Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez's signature.
Marked with the "SECOND PRINTING VARIANT" box in the lower right corner above the barcode.
Artwork by Emilio Lopez and Gustav, featuring superheroine Marisol Rios De La Luz (La Borinqueña) flying over coastal waters alongside sea turtles.
La Borinqueña #1 is much more than a standard independent comic book. It has a unique cultural, artistic, and historical footprint that sets it far apart from typical superhero media. The protagonist, Marisol Rios De La Luz, is an Afro-Puerto Rican college student from Brooklyn who becomes a powerful symbol of hope, pride, and identity. Rather than fighting typical supervillains, her narrative deeply intertwines with real-world social justice, environmental advocacy, and Puerto Rican history. Her powers are bestowed upon her by the ancient Taíno mother goddess Atabex and her twin sons (the spirits of the seas, mountains, and hurricanes), connecting a modern superhero story directly to the indigenous pre-Columbian history of Puerto Rico. The character and artwork have transcended traditional comic book pages. La Borinqueña has been featured and enshrined in major cultural institutions, including the Smithsonian Museum of American History and the National Museum of the American Indian. Created by Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez through his studio Somos Arte, the comic evolved into a real-world movement that has raised funds and awareness for communities in Puerto Rico following economic crises and natural disasters.
